Artists Room

Before you start:

• Think about where you want to paint your mural. Several of our designs lend themselves to be reused on different walls or as borders. Be creative – consider bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, walls, floors, ceilings, and doors. Remember to take into account where you will place furniture or other artwork in the area once the mural is completed.

• Think about what colors you want to use to paint the mural. We suggest matching paints to the color palette. You can purchase paint samples from many paint and craft stores. We recommend that you ask your paint supplier what quantity of paint would be required to cover your surface area since paint thickness can vary.  For convenience, label each paint sample with its corresponding number.

• You will need the following supplies: acrylic paints (or paint pens - these are ideal for outlining), brushes of various sizes, painters tape, straight edge (for linear designs), drop cloths (to protect floors/furniture), and clothes you won’t mind getting paint on.

• Prepare your wall: clean wall and repair any blemishes; prime and paint unfinished walls with a neutral background color

• If you plan to change the background wall color, transfer design to wall FIRST, then paint around design with background color (otherwise your mural colors will look less vibrant that they would on a white wall)

Transferring the mural:

• Tape the transfer paper to the wall (the dark side of the transfer paper faces the wall).

• Tape the pattern to the transfer paper, ensuring that the pattern edges line up properly.

• Firmly trace the entire pattern (including numbers corresponding to paint colors) with a ballpoint pen.

• Check to be sure that the pattern has transferred properly prior to removing pattern and transfer paper. Retrace if necessary.

Painting the mural:

• Work in a well-ventilated area with good lighting.

• Think of the mural as a giant paint-by-number project. Start painting one color (number) at a time, letting each color dry before painting the next number. You may need to paint more than one coat if the wall shows through. Use a straight edge and painters’ tape to help create sharp edges.

• Keep paints out of reach of children.

• Enjoy your new room!
